when i enter the following command at the command prompt java -version
it shows the version is 1.3.1_01. but i have installed jdk1.5.0 and even set JAVA_HOME variable the path of jdk.so since it is reading 1.3.1_01 version i unable to use Eclipse. what shoul i do?

Check that you refer to %JAVA_HOME%\bin in your PATH variable.

Eclipse's JRE can be configured at:
Windows --> preferences --> java --> installed JREs.

It doesn't matter what JAVA_HOME is set to. That environment variable isn't used by the system to determine which Java version to use.

You have to take a look at the setting of the PATH environment variable.

Make sure that the bin directory of JDK 1.5 is in the PATH before the bin directory of JDK 1.3.1.

The JDK installation notes explain how to set the PATH on different versions of Windows.
