Hi All,

Im posting this because I need some motivation to clear the SCJP exam. I know its long but please read through, Id appreciate it.

I have been lucky enough to be working at Sun Microsystems IEC India Engineering Centre [Contractor through NIIT] sometime back as an Instructional Designer (call it technical writer in a rather loose sense) and we (a team of 2 people) had to write a course on Web Apps development in AJAX, JSF using Creator 2. Cant reveal the course number and other details for obvious reasons. I had no prior Java experience and had little C++ programming knowledge. The other member didnt have any programming experience at all. The good part was that we had an SME helping us out and we both were good instructional designers (which I realized we were actually not, in true sense, once I picked up Head First Java, and noticed the presentation style and other ways to hold interest. But Kathy and Bert, you would agree that we didnt have that kind of freedom as you guys must have had while writing an official Suns course).

We took a long time to finish the course, the material was given by our SME in a raw format and we used to rewrite each sentence of it and used to make it professional, presentable, and blah blah. Our SME would also give us code snippets and sample applications as well. I suddenly realized that I started playing with code and tried to understand the JSF code but couldnt because core Java is a pre-requisite to do that. Due to long office hours I didnt have time to go through core Java. By the time the course was about to finish, I had decided that I wanted to be a web Java based web application developer and I didnt want to work as a Instructional Designer anymore because I found JSP so interesting. There were about 3 labs that we wrote (with the help of our SME) which was the most interesting part of the course for me.

So the point is I want to do core Java, Servlets, JSP, AJAX and JSF. But the problem that Im facing is that I make a start and due to some reason or other, I just dont touch the book for days together and everything is lost in the dirt and I have to start all over again. Ive tried it several times. I even joined Java classes in Bangalore through some Sun certified education partner but couldnt attend all classes because of my last job or some other silly reason. Ive quit my job as an Instructional Designer now, taken up another job that doesnt take more than 8 hours of my time (compared to the last one which used to eat up 12-16 hours plus at times my weekends).

Today Im here to announce to the world that I am making a start again, picking up Head First and I want to clear the SCJP 1.5 exam. And I dont want to stop in between. Thats is my shot-term goal. And the fact that Ive publicly made the announcement would make me not stop in between for no-matter-what reason because my reputations will be at stake. Please wish me good luck people.

Rohit Thakur.
