Since JDK 1.2.2, the name of the major releases are named after birds or mammals, whole minor erleases are named after insects by Sun developers.

Thus, Java 5 is named Tiger, Java 6 is named Mustang and Java 7 is named Dolphin.

However, the scheme with animal names for future releases has now been officially abandoned. So the name Dolphin for JDK 7 is no longer used. It's now simply JDK 7.

Sun Engineering -- like many engineering departments of corporations -- uses names for all of their projects. This is needed because product names may not exist til years later when it is closer to release.

However, the scheme with animal names for future releases has now been officially abandoned.

Sun Marketing seems to like releasing the names for Java. I always thought this was silly, as it just causes confusion -- glad to hear that they are stopping the practice.
