An interesting story. I had an almost opposite version of the situation happen. I went on holiday to The Gambia a few years ago. While there I kept looking at the people there and thinking "Why don't they hate me? My ancestors enslaved theirs". Instead they were incredibly friendly. I thought about it a bit more and felt a bit silly - they obviously bore no grudges. To them it was something that happened a long time ago, and we are friends again now.
Sometimes I think that we can become to pre-occupied in the wrongs of the past, in that we keep a grudge/guilt for too long. This is not to say that we should forget the past - there are important lessons that need to be learnt. We should, for example, never forget the awful causes of WWII, but at the same time we must accept that the average person from a "guilty" country is not guilty at all this long after the event - many of them were not even there at the time.

I didn't even remember what December 26, 1991 symbolized, but Wikipedia explained it also: "Supreme Soviet meets and formally dissolves the USSR".
The holyday is June 12.
