As such I hate using messenger, but I have MSN msgr on my machine when I need to communicate with my team in US. But today morning when I had to resolve some imp issue online, MSN simply refused to get online. and I *HATE* it!!!

So I do need another "light" messanger which is reliable. Any suggestions??? (Yahoo is out, it's equally unreliable)

Personally, I use Gaim. It is OSS and supports all major protocols.

FedEx and UPS are reliable.
Messenger ducks seem to work in some places

And a few years back IP over messenger pigeon was demonstrated in a trial between Norway and Sweden.

Well, here is the problem with this request. If you want another messenger but still chat through the MSN protocal, you could still have connection issues. Same with Yahoo. In fact, using MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger is probably going to be the most reliable connection wise because their software will stay up-to-date with the protocal.

See, Yahoo specifically tends to change their connection protocal to try and keep other software like GAIM, Trillian, etc from being able to connect to their servers.

Now, if you think "I'll just switch to AOL Messenger", that's fine and dandy, but anyone else you chat with will also need AOL Messenger.

I use Trillian myself. It lets me connect to 5 different protocals at once, just like GAIM and some others out there. They do have a free version but they also have a commercial version which supports plugins and tends to get updated faster than the free version. The only connection problems I have noticed with it are through the Yahoo protocal because of what I stated earlier.

BTW - Contrary to popular belief, applications such as Trillian and GAIM do not allow users signed on to the Yahoo servers to chat to people signed on to the MSN Servers. Although you can connect to the different servers, you can only chat yahoo-yahoo, msn-msn, aol-aol, etc. I heard at one time that MSN and Yahoo are planning a cross protocal relationship but nothing has come of it yet. Just wanted to point this out because this is a common misconception to new users to multi-server applications.
