Какой тажелый месяц Август
Как все свалилось на него
И день Рожденья моего
И многих смерть святых и храбрых
How hard the month of August is
How everything felt on it
Many saints' and braves' death.
You could find lots of things on somebody's computer. Or ML tapes. Or 29 MB disks. I reanimated their directories, byte after byte, by hands. Just hoping to find something to read. This needs another post.
I bet you have no idea what it means to find something on your computer.
Ok, let's skip it.
Somebody put something on his/her computer.
KGB cannot check *all* the computers, there is no way.
That's how I obtained the whole library of Strugatsy's novels.
There were rumors that in Samara they put guys in jail for printing texts out of ML tapes.
Our boss said nothing.
We were printing texts out of ML tapes.
I figured how to fix broken labels on ML taps. I knew what each bit meant. To make our reading device happy. I could feed it 1966's Pravda.
He said nothing.
We searched all the tapes and 29mb disks for something good.
Which meant SF, anti-Soviet, or sex.
Any of the three weren't allowed.
You could find any of the three on any disk, any disk the people who rent out CPU time mounted on our diskovods.
Most of the time they themselves had no idea what's on their disks.
We did not tell them.
We copied their disks, we printed them merciless, our boss said nothing.
He was 35, old man, he had three daughters.

She said they had to collect all the junk paper and to send it to the "First Department". Its a nickname for a security department all through the country, and all through the industries. I think, I heard it since I was born. "The First Department". It never scared me a tiniest bit, because I was born with it. It was one of my toys, as cozy a word as "milk".
I started to collect all the junk papers, just in case. She had a daughter. Somewhere between 3 and 4-th year, she got another daughter. Her husband worked full time, just like her, and they had no other relatives. "How do you manage" - I tried to ask her after the class that ended at about 22.00, but she only said "dunno" and run, run trying to catch the last tram.
Anna Adreevna Akhmatova was very afraid of and disliked the month of August. For this, there were all the reasons. In August, her husband Gumilev was shot (in Berngardovka, as we learnt later), in August her son was arrested, Gumilev's son, in August was published a famous Party's statement about the journals "Star" and "Leningrad", so in general, August was an unhappy month for her. What is "Kresty", you probably know, it's Leningrad's Butyrka.
This is a transcription of Galich's song. "Kresty" is a famous Lenigrad's prison, "Butyrka" is a famous Moscow's prison.
