Though I haven't gone through Head first Java, I assume this should be a good book since I have read good reviews about it in many websites. Also the authors are ultimate gurus.

Thease are the books I referred and find good.
1. Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel
2. Just Java 2 by Peter Van Der Linden
3. Core Java 2(2 volumes) by Cay S. Horstmann, Gary Cornell

Once you finish any of these books I suggest that you go through the following books to check your understanding of the language.

1.Effective Java by Josua Bloch
2.Java Puzzlers: Traps, Pitfalls, and Corner Cases By Joshua Bloch, Neal Gafter

I agree with Mr. V. I've just started learning java, with only minimal knowledge about programming in general; just enough to get me into trouble. I like that this book doesn't assume you know too much. It's also kind of fun. I plan on also getting a reference book. Something that I can look up stuff in; like a dictionary.
Best of luck.
