Here are some applets Popular applets

Cellphone applications are pretty widespread and popular.

Heres a link to some popular java innovations - Java innovations including cellphone and in-car.

The above makes it seem as though Java is only useful in trivial situations or in cases where you're not using heavyweight hardware - but thats not true. My own first-hand experience of Java (though I'm not a Java expert myself) is interfacing fairly large Oracle databases for Police systems. Don't know if those systems can be described as "popular"!

Do a bit of googling yourself to see what you can come up with.
