Is there a place that contains the most up-to-date API listing? With a good explanation of the function of each class?

Frequently, I write actual code to perform tasks that I later find out had a class to perform that very same function for me. I try to find a class but, all too often, am not able to find it. I believe my search methods are flawed.

Any suggestions?

You're probably aware of the core Java javadocs, but they're no joy to go through and search interesting classes. Maybe the Developers Almanac is a bit easier to digest. There's also a lot of good stuff in the Jakarta Commons Lang library; it really pays to have a long, hard look at that.
