..in elderly..

see the link, http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&ncid=519&e=17&u=/ap/20040914/ap_on_re_us/older_gamblers

While the study says, the older men, who gamble are healthier than other poeple, I guess its the other way round. Healthier people, with an active life style, explore gambling as one of their recreational activities, probably because they are more mobile.

The problem with these kind of studies is, they are not multi-dimensional. The results assume, that there exists a direct relationship between age, gambling habits and health. There can be multiple factors influencing the results..

I love this study, just because I LOVE to gamble! Although I believe that you are completely accurate in saying that it is one dimensional. The article does give opinions in both directions however stating that the correlation could actually be the other way around. It also knocked several possible holes in the study such as the study was phone based and required the participants to self report their health and gabling habits.

I am not sure that the anxiety caused by gambling is healthy for anyone, especially seniors! I watched a perfectly healthy 28 yr old win $80,000 and pass out. Although the risk of winning that much is rare, I cannot imagine how an 80 yr old would handle it!
