Bear Bibeault has a great puzzle game called Blackbox Enter the BlackBox.

I thought it would be fun to have a little contest for bragging rights, of course. No lying, cheating or anything like that. This is on your honor. All scores must start from today. No submitting old scores, except for bragging purposes only.

In two weeks 0ct 25, I'll announce the winners.

We'll use the 4 ball configuration to start with.

First contest: Straight up, lowest score wins. This can come from any other contest or be a stand alone attempt. My overall best is 9, but that won't count since it is before this contest.

Second contest: Total of three games. You must start and complete three games in a row. You can't take game #3 of a previous series and make it game #1 of a new series or combine your three best scores. You must start a distinct series each time.

Third contest: Single elimination tournament. This may or may not work out, I'll give it a shot. For starters we'll need a list interested parties. The first 16 are in. No end date for this. It will end with the last box-head standing.

Please feel free to submit scores as often as you like. You don't need to delete or edit previous posts.

Don't be intimidated by Bear's score! He did write the game after all There are plenty of bragging rights for 2nd and 3rd place too!

Besides I need your scores to create the brackets for contest #3. No throwing of the brackets now by submitting a sub-par score! I'm not going to use an average for the brackets. It will be based on your best effort.

The brackets will look like this:

1. -|
____|-- ? --|
16 -|

5 -|
____|-- ? --|
12 -|

7. -|
____|-- ? --|
10 -|

3. -|

14 -|

2. -|

15 -|

6 -|
____|-- ? --|
11 -|

8. -|
____|-- ? --|
9. -|

4. -|

Well the brackets are not displaying right. Apparently the mulitple spaces do not register. It makes sense if the pipes line up.

If anyone can help me with this, I'd appreciate it.

btw:
1) 14
2) 48

Listen for the footsteps, Bear!

Thomas, could you post details of the JS error you got (including OS and browser versions) in this topic?

Yours is the first report I've heard of such errors and am very interested in tracking it down.

thanks!

Less a function of being the author than of playing the game for almost 20 years now. My all-time best was 7 (produced by making an educated set of guesses with minimal info).

I meant to use "code" tags to force use of a fixed pitch font ... if that's what you're looking for, that is.

btw... where's your score?

Work isn't private enough to play, even while waiting for 15 minutes of tests to complete ... but after a score of games at home just now:

Best game: 8 (lucky setup; I saved a screenshot for posterity)

Best set of three: 30 (8-13-9)

Not sure how you are running the tourney, but I'm game if it fits my schedule.

I loved this game as a kid - thanks for the nice solitaire implementation, Bear!

Darn ... missed a chance at a 6! I even knew I ought to be able to get it after 6, but I could not for the life of me figure out an arrangement of balls that would work ... took me 14 points to finally figure it out.

Here's the arrangement for those who want to do better:

I can't seem to make the bracket work right. If you click " " (reply with quote) you can see how it should look. I re-did it. It is butt ugly but it should work. I left the original in case someone else can make it look right. If you're interested, I can email you the bracket.

Basically I'd like to do a single elimination format. The initial parings are already there. Subsequent parings will stay in the same positions. The winner of game 1 will play the winner of game 2 etc., until we're down to one game for the whole enchilada.

The numbers represent rank from a combination of your best single and 3 game totals. We'll have a tie breaker if need be.

The schedule can be flexible. Each round will have a due date. A day or two for each, unless that's not enough, let me know.

Each person will, on their honor, agree to play only one game during each round. It will be like a head to head match. You have to pretend that your opponent is present and only try once and then submit your score. These should be emailed to reduce temptation. Yes you! If you are offended by this, I apologize, I know how I get in a competitive situation. I'm sure most of you are above that sort of thing.

1) 11

2) 41

A little whining and excuse making... I've been getting some tough sets! Sometimes the set up combined with the first few guesses that tell you diddly, can give you a lousy game. There I feel better now. I'm due for an easy one any day now!

btw: I'll set up the brackets after the 25th when the first two contests are done. I'll do a power ranking on Saturday, so we can see where everyone stands in the pack.

Well need a bunch more to get to 16. If we don't, we'll have to change up the format. We'll cross that bridge... uh... later.

1) 9

2) 30 (11, 10, 9)

Told you I was due for an easy set or two!

We are going to need more participation if we are going to have a tourney.

I'm beginning to think I made a mistake by asking the scores to be published in for forum. I should've asked folks to email them to me.

Its either lack of interest or folks are not publishing the score unless it is a winner. This is a tough game to master and I'm still learning stuff. There's no shame in putting up a less-than-stellar score and then whittling it down.

We'll see how it goes.

Any ideas on how to make it more interesting? Not the game, the contest. I'm open to suggestions. Perhaps a prize purse worth a cool million? (credits of bragging rights)
