Welcome to JavaRanch!

Most study guides focus on details specific to the exam and assume a certain level of proficiency. So study guides are usually not the best to use as introductory texts.

An excellent introductory book is Head First Java by Sierria and Bates. This book is commonly used, so as you work through it, other people in these forums will know what you're talking about.

A good online resource is The Java Tutorial. Also, be sure you have the API documentation bookmarked.

Where are you "completely lost"? Do you have specific questions?

i'm going to move this to our SCJP forum, where the discussion can be more focused.

ok, on second thought, i'm going to leave it here. Your post seems to be more about programming in general.

If you have specific question on the SCDP test, please post a new thread in that forum.
