Welcvome to JavaRanch.

It's not an abbreviation. It refers to the Indonesian island of the same name, and/or to "Java" being used as slang for "coffee". See here for the naming history.

Well, either your "expert" is less expert than they think, or they are kidding you.

Maybe the expert read this.

Others have speculated that the name Java came from several individuals involved in the project: James gosling, Arthur Van hoff, Andy bechtolsheim. [McCarthy]

Unfortunately, the reference at the end is a broken link, so it's difficult to know how the speculation came about.

Though i come across for the 1st time and it seems to be quite agreeable, why not it would have been JGAVHAB as the 1st letter of each names being aggregated? Only for Arthur Van hoff there was a special concession?

I have also heard and read that the final or regular discussion about the language was done on the garden while they were having "coffee" and whose brand name was given to the language. Hence the name "Java".
