Because that's how it was defined in Java.

Also, it reads a lot better. Consider:

Pronounce it out loud and you have a complete English sentence!

This is an English question.

The language was developed by American English speakers, and "A extends B" is correct English.

Singular nouns take a verb a verb with an 's' on it.

Jane sees John.
John walks quickly.
Java rules!
English confuses many people (even native speakers).
