Requirements for Applet communication online

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Ok, I'm not a real beginner, but I new to online communication of Java
I have experience with Applets and Servlets/JSP and I have been busy on some applet stuff lately and I was thinking about making a sort of multi-player thingie

Now, I don't now anything about that so I would like to now what I need to make it happen, and especially what my server needs

I don't have access to a server that can run Servlets/JSP so, will I even make a chance?

sort of multi-player thingie
What's that?

You can get your own "server that can run Servlets/JSP" - tomcat is a free download.

Hello "Steven Rm"-

Welcome to JavaRanch.

On your way in you may have missed that we have a policy on screen names here at JavaRanch. Basically, it must consist of a first name and a last name. Since yours does not conform with it, please take a moment to change it, which you can do right here.

As to your question, a servlet/JSP server might not be the best kind of server to use. Are you familiar with Java socket communication? That would seem a better choice for this scenario.

Well by 'thingie' I don't mean a game just yet, just an application that has a server/client structure and that I can run on my server (and I know TomCat, but my last project was with it -on school- and didn't work that good so)

Anyway, so those sockets, I pressume they can't run on a normal server that just has php? I'm not too familiar with all those server things, so what really do I need on that machine, and how?

PS: fixed my name

Hi Steven,

"Normal server that just has PHP?" That's pretty funny Most of the Internet sites you visit have their server-side components written in Java these days. PHP isn't used for much beyond... well, ain't used for much. And Tomcat is an extremely polished, industrial strength piece of software, with uncounted installations all over the world. Lots of JavaRanch runs on it, in fact. If you have had bad experiences with it in the past, may I humbly suggest that you have another look, and this time, come here to ask for help if you run into problems.

The nice thing about socket programming is that it's language agnostic, and it's entirely possible for Java clients to talk to Perl servers, or Python clients to talk to C servers or (perhaps, I don't really know much about PHP) PHP servers, if it's enough of a programming language to support a network API.

Of course, writing clients and servers in different languages means you have to learn two different languages. Using Java on both the client and server makes your life simpler, for sure. But if you want to learn PHP and write the server with that, I'm pretty sure it can be done.

Ok I'll look into this all, and come back later when I have tried this stuff out

About that Tomcat thing, I'm sure it works fine, but it's a lot of husstle before getting some result, and I am more familiar with writing php than java servlets or JSP, but I'll look into it

thnxs,
Steven
It would give a normal human mental abilities to rival mine. To think it is just a tiny ad:
