Given that JR does not have a facilty for selecting "Ignore this thread". Can we possibly remove the "Word Association" thread? Its clutters up the list of threads with its 78 pages of purile nonsense and really gets in the way of trying to monitor real "active" and potentialy interesting threads!

I realise that this may well be the absolute epitome of "Meaningless Drivel", so perhaps has a claim to remain - but seriously folks - do we have to???

I would argue that since offensive threads are deleted efficiently there are two possible strategies to employ:

1) Declare the thread offensively dull and boring and therefore not fit for survival, or

2) Flood the thread with outrageous OTT anti-american, racist, and downright offensive "Word Associations" - in the hope that one of the gods of censorship sees 'thread death' as the best option!!!

option 3)
create another thread that's the ultimate meaningless drivel yet interesting and cause it to grow so rapidly that the WA thread disappears into obscurity.

This very thread could be that thread...

The only time I've found it a problem is when trying to navigate MD on my mobile. Clicking past 78 pages is bound to cause my thumb repetitive strain injury.

I whole-heartedly agree that the WA threads are little short of autistic. If you really want to spend your time on such endeavors, is it really fair to inflict it on the rest of the JavaRanch community? Can't you just write a program that will spit back a word at you every time you input one?

You can print out the lists and post them around your room at home. It'll be ever so much fun! Go and play now, go on...

Just play that thread with some offensive words, such as "America", "War", "Geneva Conventions", "Oil" -- it'll go down to the recycle bin in no time.

We could start discussing "Web Frameworks" or JSF" on it, that way it might get moved to a forum that is seriously in need of a bit of attention.

Who is there to decide which thread is dull, boring and nonsensical? If everyone is given the right to kick off other thread just because he/she finds it dull and boring, this MD forum will soon become extinct.

If I had my druthers I'd delete all of those really long threads, so I can certainly see where Adrian is coming from. Personally, I can't stand them. However, as of yet there has been no valid reason to remove them, and I certainly don't spend any time looking in those threads for anything offensive so unfortunately, it's not likely that they're likely to go anywhere anytime soon.

Do what I do.

If someone is offensive or a thread is offensive, I simply ignore it. Meaningless Drivel is a place to hang out and goof off. Who really cares if there is a really long thread of meaningless words. I remember, years ago, when it was started (or one similar) I lost interest a long while back and just ignore it. It was fun for a while.

Does it really matter all that much?

The fact that so many of us can't stand them is a valid enough reason to dump those threads. You've got the green light, Jason, do your job and bury 'em. The determination that those threads are pure junk is not subjective -- it's just common sense.

As this thread is getting serious.

I dont see why anyone should advocate to remove a thread which follows this forum policy.

Though I dont remember myself ever participated in WA but I have no problem if others enjoy posting there and it comes once in a while at top of page.

If thread is long and meaningless what possible problems could other have??

I don't believe this thread is long enough. How about going for 100 pages? We can bring new meaning to meaningless. We can if we try!

if not today may be after 4-5 yrs.

I wonder if there is a world record category for "The least meaningfullness in the most amount of words written by the most different authors"?

Nah, I doubt it, no categories with titles that long.

Wow. MD has truly become an art and we are the artists. We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams.

We've come to the point of discussing what it means to be MD, in the MD forum, with words of MD.

It's like a poetry reading where all of the poets are so absorbed that all of their poems are about poetry.

It's like a meaningless nirvana.

Nice try Adrian but all attempts to kill the thread will be pointless, either myself or other moderators will just do as I have just done and delete your attempts to be provocotive.
Just because the thread is there you don't have to look at it. If you don't like the game, don't play it.
It's fun for the people who have been playing along and is doing no real harm, so stop being such a kill joy, this site isn't just for you!

Also may I point out that another repercussion that you may not have considered if you carry out this attempt will be Account Death!!

Really, it takes less than a second to scan past it on the list, is it really worth sabotaging?
