According to this news link there was evidence that some terrorists captured recently had plans to attack IT development centers. That is kind of scary.

Yes it is. It is easy to attack any IT office in India. They only need some guns.

Acquiring guns in India is not so easy.In addition, intelligence agencies although technlogically backward have very good social network spread across the country through which information is extracted and action can be taken.

chain managament? .
Issue is country shares lot of border with few countries:China/Pakistan/Bangaldesh,Myanmar/Nepal/Bhutan.Its practically difficult to control every intrusion with scarce resources, and not so honest officers and outdated technology.

Those terrorists have already done a pre-emptive strike. In 1998 on Feb 14 there were 40 bomb blasts in the space of one hour in a little known city called Coimbatore, in Tamil Nadu - some 8 hours by road from Madras. It was the beginning of the IT boom in India and Coimbatore was under the radar for big IT firms. Those ( insert favorite expletive ) terrorists might not have known about IT or computers but they did a huge damage. Businesses came to a stand still and 7 years after the incident still Coimbatore is recovering. Recently I heard big IT firms are buying land in and around Coimbatore. Already there is an incubation center in PSG institution of technology. Were the terrorists captured? No. Was their infrastructure ruined? No. Its politics and the ( insert your other favorite expletive ) politicians do not want to mess with their vote bank or whatever reasons that serves them the best. Is it easy to repeat such an act? - unfortunately yes. India is running on luck and dont know when its going to run out of it. As some one posted the intelligence community has a very good social network - but whats the use when the powers who have to act - do not want to act on it?

How so ever corrupt politicians may be,generally they don't interfere in these matters as they don't see any profit or loss in such cases. They might interfere only when some of "their men" be invloved in such activities. But that rarely happens.
IMO ,method of intelligence gathering, technology and hiring practices opted by Indian agencies are outdated and mediocre.Just search in google.None of the Indian intelligence agencies have their own website.Nowhere its known how they function, what they do,how hiring takes place.Financial audit is not done for agency,Research and Analysis Wing.In short, everything is kept secret from public. As Bruce Schneier says "behavior recognition" is one of the solution. The less open you are, more danger infront of you.

Cool down man . Cricket test match is going on.Anybody can give a threat,no special "skills" required to do that. Also more than publicity, police should do their work honestly.

.I already said although cops technologically backward, their network is very strong.
{
Twelve hours after the Wipro office on MG Road recieved a bomb hoax, a 30-year-old software engineer of the company was arrested. Prashanth Kumar threw his office, in SB Towers on MG Road, into a state of near total chaos by making the hoax call on Wednesday.

Kumar, a resident of Frazer Town, made the call to his office at around 9.30 am.
Following the call, officers and staff rushed out of the office. The bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs that were rushed to the spot, however, found nothing in the entire building, including a newspaper office located in the premises and the parking lot in the basement.

Call traced
The police traced the call to a telephone booth on Wheeler Road and swung into action. They collected details of all the calls made during the time of the hoax and called up the numbers. One of the calls, it turned out, was made by Kumar to his wife, immediately after making the hoax call.

Right but if it was terrorist, would they have done it ? The employee made the mistake of calling his wife from the same phone.

What happened to the employee ? Is Wipro planning to take action on him?

Terrorist definitely won't call over a phone that bomb has been kept.If you go through the news 3 days back,in Delhi some men were arrested. The next day near Belgaum railway station, one man was arrested carrying granades and all materials.During interrogation, man confesses that he brought the weapons from Zharkhand and was carrying for selling to Goa.
Now train carries more than 1000 people at a time. How did cops precisely locate this man immediatly the next day?answer is: cops know from where weapons come and where they go.They also know the precise route on which all kinds of illegal activities happen. When such big news is exposed, they have to show to media that thay have done some work. These men involoved in such illegal activities are many times used for foriegn intelligence gathering.Every country does that.

Poor guy, he should be rewarded for keeping the cops on their toes.
The technologically backward cops should also be rewarded for tracing out the caller with their intelligence network.

however, I thought use of technology to trace a call would have been a better idea ... anyway

The crime rate in Bangalore had increased by 42%. In last 2 days about 10 people have been robbed of their money/mobile phones/bike. My mobile phone is already stolen. Bnaglore police are pretty useless and bunch of jokers. In many cases, police rob people during night. The state gov is

really? I have never heard this. Most of the time I see traffic cops stopping outside state vehicles and then earning some money on week end.I was stopped on 30th December for weird reason "Year end tip". . He also advised me to change the the number evernthough by law it is not required if you pay "life long" tax.
Crime rate has increased.Recently in one case, thief slapped one programmer talking over a cell phone standing on road, snatched the cell phone, purse and ran away.

Police robbing people has come up for discussion in state assembly but nothing comes out of these political debates . As the crime rate is increasing the CHief Minister and police are putting on more weight.

When I went to police station to file complaint regarding the theft of my mobile, they wanted 100 Rupees before I filed the complaint. I would have not given the money and filed the complaint but I needed to get a new SIM card so I had to part with 100 Rupees. After I filed my complaint , the police man again asked for Rs.100. I had plead with him, after 2 hours of waiting he gave the acknowledgment of the complaint. This is Bangalore police. Honest and efficient guys, bringing glory to Bangalore and India. .

I hear many such things from my collegues. I can write a book on this one.

It is better to robbed by thieves rather than police.

Note from non-Indian:
I think such behaviour can only partly be explained with "policemen do earn to little wages". Good policemen do earn to little money everywhere.
Or that all Indians are getting corrupt when having pistol and uniform.
Corruption is like cancer.
One apple starts with the habbit and in the end the whole basket sees it as normal behaviour.
For example in southern cone of america:
- if chilean police stops you, no problem.
- if argentinian police stops you, chances are high that you are going to loose some money.
And chilean police don't earn more money than argentinian police.

Its very difficult to stop with bad habbits.

May be you should do the same thing again, but inform and have the
[URL=http://cvc.nic.in/]Central Vigilance Commission]/URL] officers on the stand-by. If you get not getting enough support and response from Vigilance, talk about it, write about it, write to polities, ministers, media, judges, other administration, anyone you think have a say, blog it, form a group and start naming and shaming corrupt officials, just do something about it!! Sitting back and taking it easy is the real reason why we still have corruption in the society.

Complaining does not work in India. My friend had done something like that before. Officials and police in Passport office, bangalore are highly corrupt.

He had to get some correction in his passport. He had reached the passort office early in the morning at around 6 AM. He was the 2nd person standing in the queue. There was a police official standing at the entrance. The passport office opens at 9.30 AM.

After some time more people joined the queue, may be there were about 30 people. A car arrives at the place, a guy gets down takes out a fresh 100 rupees note, gives it to the Police. Police guy is . His daughter gets down from car and is the first person in the queue. My friend protests and so does the guy before him. The Police threatens both of them and says that the girl had come before the first guy. This was a big lie. (This is Bangalore police)

One more girl joins the queue becomes the first person in the queue. Why first and not 2nd because her dad paid 200 rupees. My friend gets pushed to 10 th place as more "rich" people join the queue.

When the office opens , my friend did complain to the higher official.
He is more corrupt guy. He calls the police man and ask for explanation (money). Police man gives 500 rupees out of his collection to him. He smiles and takes the money.

When my friend shouted at the official, he threatens to throw him out. My friend had no option but to keep quite as he needed the correction to be done in the passport.

My friend tried writing to news papers , but no one published his story. He is happy now since he in USA(Free from corruption , can I say?).

Regarding CVC the less said the better. I wont waste my time writing about the them.

Corruption and crime have increased ever since there was a change in the state gov.

I have complained thrice by sending mail to Lokayukta regarding bribary in Regional Transport Office. Not even a reciept.Lokayukya here is supposed to be very honest, often publicizes himself about his work, ask people to complain about non working officials etc but I found reality totally different.
Complaining to media won't help. Its managed.

Arjun & Pradeep,

I see what you mean, and how corruption is becoming more or less normal in the society etc, but I believe it is not totally irrecoverably bad if your friend had a bad experience at the passport office, and he tried protesting and it didnt help, he need to protest more, and find more people like himself and do something about it. Same with the thing Arjun mentioned just do it until you get a response!

Call me idiotically optimistic, but there I dont see any other way about this not a lot is going to change if at this rate even if everyone gets all fancy jobs, and GDP grows to first in the world, IMHO!
