Sorry, I still don't get it. From your formulation above, it seems what you are asking is "Would you rather be poor or rich?". I don't see any "luxury vs status" content here. Perhaps the confusion is that status often goes with luxury. That is, when one pays a lot of money for luxury, it gives one a certain status.
