I had to upload this picture, so I thought I might as well point it out here:

This is my son, Dane, helping me build a duplex farrowing hut: a place for mama pigs to give birth to babies. It's on skids so I can drag it around the farm.

This next pic is of Dane (age 13) doing a little arc welding:

He's welding a piece of scrap metal onto a 3/4 inch thick piece of cable that will be run through the skids to give something for the tractor to attach to to drag the hut.

I thought it would take us a two days to build the hut, but it has taken over a week and it still isn't done. The first mama pig couldn't wait:

Shouldn't your son be wearing more protection? In college, i was welding in the scene shop, when a nice little ball of molten metal landed in the little slit between my pants and my shoe, burning a hole through my sock and then down into my skin...

i now have a nice dime-size scar on my ankle. granted, not a debilitating injury, but it sure hurt like a mother for a few days...

Cotton pants do a good job of deflecting burning materials.

In other news: the farrowing hut is done. Anybody want to see pics?

Be sure to read, understand and follow all the instructions that come with your power tools. And remember there is no more important safely rule than to wear these, safety glasses.

Very nice. I liked the character of "Dane, the serf" the best! Isn't anybody gonna overthrow Evil Emporer so Dane can become the Just and Kind King?
