hi, just wondered if Hibernate Search has any ability to leverage the databases own search facilities.

PostgreSQL , for example, has a 'tsearch' extension that provides full-text indexing.

Or is it more a standalone mechanism to hook up Lucene and any DB?

Dick,

As you say, Hibernate Search is an open source stand alone way to provide full text search capabilities with databases.

Proprietary full text search indexes built by databases such as PostGreSQL's tsearch and Oracle's Oracle Text are just that, proprietary. With no information on their structure or workings readily available it's impossible to interface with them.

Hope this helps.

As John said this is not possible.
There are a few reasons why we did not go that path;
-Lucene is by far much more flexible than DB based full-text and we thing flexibility is critical to make useful search engines for your users
- it provides full portability across databases (like Hibernate Core does)
- some full-text search implementations provided by databases are pretty shameful
