eeeuuugh - commercial beer

My current favourite beer (seems to change from week to week) was made from a 3kg tin of "ESB" (a malted english ale).. brewed with just 20ltrs of water instead of the usual 23lt (to give a thicker consistency).. and primed with 120g of malted dextrose and poured at about 11C into a fresh pint glass for the smoothest creamiest head possible out of a 750ml bottle... Locals would no doubt describe it as "flat", but it has just enough effervescence to cling to the glass and "feather" palette without me into a belching idiot! (just a drunken one! )


of course its only my favourite until I run out and have to make some more!
next batch is Munich style lager (now that weather has cooled enough for decent lager yeast to work) with a malt extract and plain dextrose primer (about 140g since a lager need to be slighly fizzier!).. - served chilled to 3C and of course in a smaller pilsner style glass!

Of course if I'm out and about and dont have access to my favourite homebrewed beers then I'll drink any old rubbish that comes from the pub tap 'cos all the chemical filled beer in Australia is terrible tasteless rubbish - Cant wait to go home to England for a holiday and drink some decent ales again!

It always surprises me, when I go for a drink, the large number of people who drink lager instead of a proper beer. Why? Its fizzy, tasteless nat's pee. Maybe its because the big companies make it, and can afford nice adverts, or ale has a reputation as being an "old man's beer". Shame really - I hate that more and more pubs are ditching their ales and only offering plasticy beers like John Smiths, or worse yet only lager.

Anyway, summer is almost here (although you wouldn't believe it at the moment in London), so here's to a nice beer or two out in the sun!

I tasted La Folie at the New Belgium Brewery in Ft. Collins, Colorado. The initial taste was a powerful vinegary sour attack. I thought I hated it. Then I wanted to taste it again. Wham! Same effect. After about three rounds of this I decided I loved it and it was the best stuff I could remember having. Now I crave it, and I can't get it easily. Drat.

As far as stuff I can buy, I'm over 40 and trying to stay fit, so I drink "lite" beer. The only acceptable low calorie beer I've encountered is Amstel Light. If I'm feeling skinny I'll usually prefer a Fat Tire.

Funny how that means different things to different people!

In USA "Lite" means lo-cal but same strength (~4%)
In Australia "Lite" means same-cal, but low alcohol (~3%) [5% being considered normal]...

make the wrong assumptions when travelling and you'll end up fat in australia or arrested for DUI in USA!

I got my dad a membership to this Rare Beer Club. Its kind of pricey -- but they send beers that you can't by anywhere else (also, note they can't deliver to all the states).

I'm not a beer coinnesseur, but I do really enjoy several of the beers at DuClaw Brewing Company. Bare Ass Blonde Ale, Ravenwood, and Kangaroo Love are my brews of choice there, although the current seasonal Sawtooth is pretty good. Anyone here every been there?

on the whole though, i agree that most australian beers are to full of chemicals...

I've brewed a couple of the coopers kits and I'd rate them in the mid-range. They seem to be drinkable - but not outstanding - certainly a cut above anything else you can get without going to a specialist homebrew shop. But I've not seen coopers in pubs very often so cant comment on their commercial offerings!

I don�t bear is not my favorite drink. Some say bear will gives me a bear belly. It just makes me fat like a little fat kid. I think apple shaped people like bear the most, so it gives the allusion that beer makes you apple shaped. Woman tend to be pear shaped and thus tend to like beer less then men. Woman of African origin are pear shaped even still and they are even less likely to be seen with a bear in their hands.

Looks like an interesting little company -- thanks! Their locator page tells me the nearest retailer in in Great Falls, Virginia -- a bit far to go. I'll keep an eye out.

That locator is not reliable. They tell me to buy their beer from a store that closed two years ago. And they don't have the two supermarkets that are less than 5 miles away that sell their beer. Is it legal to send beer through the mail?
