Lets say I have a link www.link.com/sublink/01.mp3
so I want to make a program that downloads that and saves it on my desktop.
Where can I find basic guides to download files from the internet using java?

A library like HttpClient makes programmatic access to HTTP resources pretty easy.

URL in combination with URLConnection is a bit easier but less powerful.
