I find myself in the position on needing a great deal of printing work: so much so that I could probably start a small print shop for the amount of money I'm going to be spending over the next year.

Because I tend to embrace my problems as opposed to fighting them, I'm going to start a small print shop

Any printing experts here? Anyone know what sorts of printers I need, what's a good deal, what features I need to look for, etc?

Hi Max,

my wife bought me a HP Deskjet 6840 color printer with a duplex unit for a price of 183.00 Euro in Germany.

Hope that cover all you need :

Built-in networking capabilities: Connect to either a wired or a wireless network without using an external print server.

Ink-backup mode: Ink-backup mode lets you continue printing with one print cartridge when the other print cartridge has run out of ink.

Print Cancel button: Cancel print jobs at the touch of a button.

Print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper: Use the printer software to print up to 16 pages on a single sheet of paper.

Borderless printing: Use the entire page surface when printing photos and cards by using the borderless printing feature.

Digital photo printing: Use the enhanced digital photo printing capabilities.

Six-ink upgradeable printing: Enhance photo printing with a photo print cartridge.

Direct camera printing: Use the PictBridge port on the front of the printer to print photographs directly from a digital camera.

Optional Automatic Two-Sided Printing Accessory: Purchase a Automatic Two-Sided Printing Accessory to print two-sided documents automatically.

Optional Auto Two-Sided Print Accessory with Small Paper Tray: Purchase a Optional Auto Two-Sided Print Accessory with Small Paper Tray to print two-sided documents automatically and load small media from the back of the printer.

Optional 250-Sheet Plain Paper Tray Accessory: Purchase an optional 250-Sheet Plain Paper Tray Accessory and expand the printer's paper-handling capability.

Regards,
Darya

I don't know if I qualify as an "expert", but I have owned several printers, 2 HP LaserJets, 2 Canon Ink spitters, an NEC QuietWriter, a couple of dot matrix devices and I've used offset lithograph (Hiedleberg) and silkscreen presses. I've also used printshops that do digital offset using Indigo presses.

It all depends on your requirements.

I currently use a Canon ink jet for occasional printouts in either black and white or colour and an old HP LaserJet 6P for large standard text runs.

The most important aspect of a printer is the cost of consumables. You have to measure the setup cost versus the cost per page. If you need colour and borderless printing, you are probably better off outsourcing the work to a real print shop unless you plan to produce several thousand copies and want to buy a professional grade colour printer.

If you are planning to set up a professional digital print shop you should investigate technologies such as digital offset printing. This can produce long runs at affordable prices, with digital control.
