It'll be better if you go for SCJP 6. Because there are very few differences between SCJP 5 & 6 versions. You can check here for the differences between these two versions.
Regarding K.B. SCJP book, I am sorry mate. You have to buy it. There is no free edition available and this forum does not encourage illegal stuffs.

You MUST go for SCJP6. You will basically have to prepare on only a few topics and you will get around 3-4 questions from the new topics. So it will be a waste if you go for SCJP 5. And don't worry you will get enough help on SCJP6 as you will on SCJP 5 on javaranch...

No other book required.
After K&B just mocks, practice and discussion on javaranch required.

Antraiksha as far as I know SCJP 1.4 is now discontinued. But even if it was alive, then also you must not go for it. It is very old now. Just go for 6.0. It will boost your career a lot...

If you are not running in hurry, then you can take up SCJP 1.6. Because, you don't need to worry about SCJP-Update for next one or two years!

Antriksh don't go for 5.0. IMO you must go for 6.0. You are right that most of the mock exams are on 5.0. But there are only 2-3 New API classes in 6.0 and the K&B book and Master Exam cover them completely. I got 3 questions from the new API in my exam and all the three questions were quite simple and were from the book. So don't loose this opportunity to get certified with the latest version of the exam...

I agree with Ankit, definitely go for 6.0. I assume you are getting this for a reason and not just because you have nothing better to do. SCJP6 is more credible and shows you know the latest in Java technologies as opposed to 5.0 which will at some point become obsolete and will get there way before 6.0 does. Don't you want your certification to be viable for a longer period of time? Also, like Ankit said, the difference in material from 5.0 to 6.0 is very minimal, the biggest factor your going to have is the new material from 1.4 to 5.0/6.0 which is mostly Generics (but that is a huge topic).

Also...

True Rajshekhar .. I have to buy an book n im going to get one too.
But sometimes need an e-book ,along with me,whenever get time i use to prepare [as im working too !!].

I don't know about 5.0 but if you buy the K&B SCJP 6.0 book it comes with a CD in the back with a "take with you" version of the book. I take it with me everywhere because I am working as well and I find it a lot more accessible than the 850 page book!

Good Luck!!

I almost forgot... they also have an additional 8 chapters on the CD which are especially for AFTER you get your SCJP. It talks about the SCJD certification and what to expect/how to prepare. So, you basically get 2 books in 1. Again, I don't know if the 5.0 book comes with this or not.

Yes, I have the 5.0 book/CD and it also has the SCJD chapters.

Thanks Ankit ,Brian ,patrick .
Ankit Im going with SCJP6 now.I have to work Harder. That's it !!
I think im already late .. so why not to delay it more for better purpose.

Brian ,Generics and each chapter in K&B is elaborated .So that is not bothering me. What bothering is lack of appropriate material[mocks etc.] on SCJP6.But now you too are preparing and Ankit [like Bonds] is there to guide so [DOnt Worry,Be happy !!]

Hope to get guidance further too ,while im in SCJP6 preparation.[Mock Links or some other helping material specifically for SCJP6]

Thanks fellas !!

I appreciate your suggestions.

Hi everyone,
I am just about ready to take scjp5 in dec end.All the books, mocks i bought are for scjp5.And again and again i am tempted to take scjp6.
Can anyone just help me from where to get questions, materials which are not in scjp5 but are in scjp6..
Or should i just forget abt it. and go on with scjp5 as i prepared for it only.

I think you should go for SCJP 6.0 as Ankit mentioned before ... there only few new API class to read and on top of that most important thing is you will have latest ceritfication in Java.

Even I was in same dilema one week back but after reading all post of Java Ranch and comparing things i have decided to go for SCJP 6.0

Hope this helps

hi guys,

i think SCJP 5.0 or SCJP 6.0 woludnt make much of a difference

as the exam syllabus is almost the same......all the basic concepts are the

same. only that some of the api's have been added.so i guess if you have

prepared for SCJP 5.0 you should go for it

SCJP 5.0,90%
