parse( ) of DateFormat

This is a example from KS book (Page 481)

Date d1 = new Date(1000000000000L);
System.out.println("d1 = " + d1.toString());
DateFormat df = DateFormat.getDateInstance(DateFormat.SHORT);
String s = df.format(d1);
System.out.println(s);
try 
{
Date d2 = df.parse(s);
System.out.println("parsed = " + d2.toString());
} catch (ParseException pe) {
System.out.println("parse exc"); }

Can somebody tell me a real world use of such a code...
So that it would be helpful to understand the use of parse() completely.

Suppose you have created a web application where user enters some date in a text box (or using a calender widget). Now that date comes to the servlet as a String. The servlet will parse the string using DateFormat and use it as it wants...

Just to remind you that all the parsing method e.g. NumberFormat.parse, DateFormat.parse throws ParseException which is a checked exception. So keep that in mind in the exam ...
