okay, this is my personal opinion, but I feel google is misusing the europhia around open source for spreading itself.

Does making APIs available means supporting open source? No. Google is encouraging people to write code around their API. Google not making its technology open!

There is gread application written around Google maps API, author says he/she will release code soon? its not released yet, but its still being called open source? Why?

Why would Google want to release their intellectual property?

Thats not the point. I bet google won't even do it.

But then what their APIs listed on open source projects section, they are not open source

They would be idiots to open source their code. If it was open source, then anyone with enough hardware could recreate google. If it was open source, people could figure out what to do to make their site show up ahead of someone else's site. Google provides APIs to access their features but I wouldn't expect them to provide anything else.

If protecting their intellectual property is not the point, then what is the point?

Reject those people who just give you an API and ask you to write 'great' code.

Now I am super curious what sports would be like if we allowed drugs and tiny ads.
