Can anyone please explain why Enums cannot be Instantiated?

An enum represents a fixed set of constant values. It would not make sense to be able to instantiate an enum.

You can think of it as a class with only static members.

Not a good analogy. Enums can be defined with instance members and methods.

Perhaps it'd be better to think of it as a class with predefined instances.

because enums fixed constants are implicitly static and final, and you don't need an instance of the class to access static variables.. you just need the class itself..
 
Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
