Sorry, forgot to mention that. Its the exam study guide by David Bridgewater, Dreamtech press (Exam 310-081 upgrade exam 310-082). I remember I was not able to view the SCJP cd also. The SCJP book is also from the same publishers and written by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates. But I was able to view that from a windows machine.

Somebody at Amazon mentions that the CD runs on Windows 98 or higher. Nothing about Unix mentioned. Like the SCJP book, I guess it will run on Windows only.

Thats really sad. It should not happen with something related to Java, which is a language compliant with different Operating Systems. So does it mean that even if java works well in linux, we must have windows to go through the mock exam in the cd?
i think i have to install the tests in my neighbours' laptop.

But is the content of the CD written in Java? Just because it's a Java book it doesn't have to be... Even then there are numerous reasons to use a native wrapper, with over 90% of the world running Windows.

P.S. I am a proponent of various Linux distros, so don't bash me! It is a fact that Windows is used almost everywhere, and there's nothing we can do about it really.

Yea I agree with you. The publishers could have done something for the Linux users also. but then the question comes : for how many OSes? since there are other OSes like solaris, unix etc. Hmm..it seems I really have to ask my neighbor's help.

You could try using Wine---it's an open source Windows emulator for Linux that works well for some programs. If not installed already, Ubuntu can do it from the Synaptic package manager, or "sudo apt-get install wine" on the command line. Let me know if you try it!

Thanks Charles. I installed wine. I was able to see the first window (titled "Interactive Training") when i clicked the LaunchTraining.exe. When i tried with the options such as 'MasterExam' or BonusExam' it didnt work out. When i clicked the MasterExam link, it threw memory reading error. I am not able view the Master Exam. I also tried the MasterExam.exe in the 'robo' folder also. all the exe files threw memory read error.

I was in the same predicament with the SCJP LearnKey CD--what ended up working for me (using Darwine on a Mac using 10.4) was copying all the files from the CD to a folder on the desktop. Running LaunchTraining.exe from the folder seems to work then (though I've only just started working through the quiz questions, so I can't say for sure if ALL features on the CD work). Another thing to note is that the CD is still in the drive--I haven't tried it with the CD ejected yet. Hope this helps!
