Is it worth visiting for a night, or should I stay in S.F. one more night? Is there any night life worth seeing in the East Bay Area?

Berkeley near the Cal campus is good for shopping and nosing about. A drive up into the hills, always good for a gorgeous view of the Bay. Or you could take a spa day at the Claremont Hotel. Wouldn't be sorry for any of those outings.

I think I might just rent an exotic and go up into the mountains. I'll wing it, depending on how I feel Saturday afternoon. I'll be swimming the Bay, (from Alcatraz), on Saturday morning.

Thanks, man.

BTW Mike E., what is the cool part of Berkley? North Berkley by the university?? I guess if I do stay, I'd like to be in the section with any of the bars, cafes, etc.

Thanks.

Why? Should I be expecting to run into some older alcoholic women, trying to seduce me?

Hey! Good luck on your swim. Berkeley has a couple of neighborhoods with good food and bars. Just south of campus (Telegraph Ave.) you'll find the most eclectic mix of people and a few bars (Blake's, Raleigh's). West of campus on Shattuck (right near the downtown Berkeley Bart station) is one of my favorites - Jupiter. They've got outdoor seating, good beer and live music. There's also Beckett's, an Irish pub - food is a bit greasy though. North on Shattuck is Triple Rock and a few blocks further North is Cesar, (cocktails and tapas). It's right next to the infamous Chez Panisse restaurant.

What kind of food do you like? We've pretty much got it all here. And if you are into coffee, the cheapest and bestest latte can be found at the French Hotel (right near Cesar).

Thanks KS!!

Well, I appreciate the fact you shared the link, but not that I got beat so badly by that damn dirty dawg, Jake. When I saw Jake jump off the ferry, I was like, "Damn, I better beat the dang dawg!!!" It totally lit a fire under my butt. I do not know how the dog did so well, it didn't look like it was moving all that fast.??? !!!

I came in at 1:06. Which put me at the end of the pack. Overall, I was very happy with my swim. I managed to stay with the pack, albeit, at the end of it. I had to get pulled out of a bad current the first time I attempted the swim, so I know that lonely feeling of seeing all the yellow swim caps slowly disappear a head of me...

My shoulder did not give me any trouble. (I had been seeing a sports therapist three times per week for the previous two weeks and it seemed to do the trick.) The water was warm by S.F. Bay standards, at 60 degrees and there was almost no wave activity, so I didn't swallow but a couple of mouth fulls. The last time I did it I drank alot as the waves were high and frequent.

If anyone is interested there's another one on September 10. There are a lot of repeat swimmers, so the ferry ride has a lot of good karma. A number of swimmers don't use wetsuits either. I'd really like to close that gap between myself and Jake, so hopefully the wife, will let me go.

BTW, I was so high-strung afterwards that I bagged the trip to Berkley/Oakland. I guess I was totally pumped up and needed to DO something. So I was going to rent a car and drive North, but couldn't fathom even sitting for a beer or coffee, so I headed down to LA. It was very peaceful driving, listening to music, enjoying the scenery and basking in the glory from a successful event.

Hey John -

Looks like I'm late in responding to this, but also looks like it didn't matter, at least for this go.

There are six major 'long' streets that cross Berkley/Oakland parallel to the bay. From west to east, they are: San Pablo Avenue, Martin Luther King Blvd, Adeline, Shattuck, Telegraph and College. To be in the thick of things, you want to be Shattuck and east, and somewhere between University Avenue and Ashby Avenue.

There are exceptions. College Avenue runs with interesting little stops along the way from the university down to Broadway -- about 3 miles. Right where CA-24 crosses College Avenue is the center of the Rockridge District, with a BART station that drops you smack dab there. Great collection of restaurants and bars up and down College Ave. from there.

If you venture along San Pablo Avenue between University and Ashby (both have turnoffs from I-80), there's lots of cool funky stuff. Emeryville has got more and mroe going on too, what with Siebel, Pixar, and some other major companies rooted there.

But I'd say start around the university next time you're out: hard to go wrong. I like Top Dog on Hearst for good cheap eatin' (also a ton of alternatives, just circle the block); Garibaldi's over in the Rockridge if you don't mind spending, Blondie's on Telegraph for a slice, not to mention loads of sidewalk culture. In fact a stroll on Telegraph, from say University Avenue down to Dwight Way or so, would sad thing to miss. Lots to looks at.

Thanks Mike!! I'll be out that way again for sure. (I'd like to definitely do the swim without a wetsuit someday.) I'd also like to check out Berkeley...

Gimme a little notice and I'll cart you around some if you like. I like the area a lot but don't get many occasions to wander through.
