I suggest one with good battery life, so it can do the job which you bought it for much longer. Get one with plenty of memmory, because otherwise Windows will churn the hardrive and draining battery quickly.

Certain new Dell models have a battery capacity of up to nine hours. The only problem is that Dell only provides a one year warranty of batteries, even if you purchase extended warranty.

Mind giving link to the model that you ultimately decide to purchase? I thought Compaq & Vaio (Sony) were good ones as well.

My company promised to buy me one machine this year, but I haven't heard since!

I was just wondering, Why don't you look for the specifications in each model instead of relying on the brand name. Does it make any difference between these brand names or buying the laptop from some local company. I always thought things like - the type of processor, RAM, hard drives, cache memories and other options provided in each model/brand are more important than brand names. With a Brand name comes a big price too.

With a brand name also comes a level of support and reliability based on strength and reputation of the company.

Type and quality of components is important, but you can't do too much about all that with many laptop models. What's a standard laptop case or power supply look like? It's not like you can mix and match on too much, and the commodity items like memory aren't that much cheaper after-market to warrant a lot of fuss.

With laptops, better to go with company reputation as well as product quality.

A Brand name does give reiability and support but the price that they charge seem to me too much for that and the locals price is comparatively less. While the locals might be able to charge less with things like power supply or laptop case low quality but about other components I think If one knows about which models are being used then its the same as in other brand name laptop.

I don't know much about that 'mix n match things about laptops as you said'. If that is the case then may be you are right about going with brand names but the price is too high.

Go for Dell esp. if you can get in from US someway. Dell US often throws deals ($750 off etc.) and that does makes it a good overall deal.

if you can afford the small extra cost, choose one from a company with good customer service, and a package with good guarantee deal

with that you will have peace of mind

What about Sony. I just got a Sony FS500 customized and I love it. Although like was said earlier, the battery life is important and I think I got a bum one.

I'd go with an iBook - great service, and it uses an actual operating system! For a few bucks more... Powerbook all the way!

My personal choice would be a SONY VAIO . Performance is great..Looks greater... i'd say it's a style statement. And this B77GP is my 7th Sony product i've purchased ..i've become kind of a Sony freak.

SONY Vaio is very good. Although tough to convert to linux, but once you do it's very reliable. The external CD-ROM/Burner/DVD-ROM rocks!

I like the 5 subject ones. Then you can have multiple topics in the same notebook. If you use a pencil then the memory can be dynamic and you can change it as often as you like. Also, short of a fire, the memory is always available and rarely fails.

I think he was looking for something a little more modern, something with more bells and whistles... like the Mead Trapper Keeper.

The Mead trapper keeper has terrible battery time! (Perhaps that is due to the fact that it doesn't have a battery)

Laptops are like consummables, take ACER Celeron for 27K and change it after two years, when the warranty is over. It saves a lot of money as well.

that makes sense, as after 2 years, your laptop will be very old for new technologies....maybe that time, websphere ad will need at least 10 gig memory =b

my dell Inspiron 6000 (only 20 days old) has crashed

am repeatedly getting "Delayed Write Failure"...all web postings point towards HDD Contoller / hard disk corruption...looks like i might have to replace the hard disk..

am 2 call the Dell customer support today evening (i hate calling these tech support ppl - at the end i feel like having talked 2 an used-car salesman!! not 2 mention the automated options until i get a human voice!!)....

on hindsight i cud have gone over 2 Circuit City / BestBuy so that if in case i need a replacement, i can do it easily - rather than ship it back 2 Dell
