1.Get a neural feedback machine.
2.Meditate
3.Drink coffee
4.Try supplements Ginseng and Genko
5.Learn Tia Chi
6.Chew on some gum.
7.Get enough sleep.
8.Abstain from TV

I agree with 2 of the above. Abstain from television and try about 30 minutes of meditation a day. Its really easy. Just read up a little bit about it and figure out what style works for you.

I have the opposite problem -- my mind is always focused trying to figure out something, and it's difficult to "unthink". So, I suppose I should:

1. Get a neural breakdown machine
2. Stop meditating
3. Stop drinking coffee
4. Not use supplements such as Ginseng and Genko
5. Obstain from Tia Chi
6. Not chew
7. Get very little sleep
8. Watch TV as much as possible

Sometime our life becomes so routine that we act like mechanical device. Daily same work, same places, same food and same people. Actually we start digging hole and because of continuous digging for a long time at same place, that hole is not longer a hole, but it becomes well. And we cant get out of the well.

Our mind also acts in a same manner. If we keep doing same things for a long time two things can happen.
Either we will not be able to concentrate on them if we dont like them or we got bored by them or.
Or we will not be able to concentrate on other if we like what we are doing presently or our mind is not ready to try something new or.

The only way to avoid this is to doing something different in daily routine. Just need to break the circle. Check your routine and see; can you replace any existing activity with the new activity?

I suggest following change

(1)Whatever time you are spending behind TV, just cut it down to half and spend the gained time in walking, talking with people or just be alone.
(2)If you dont read newspaper start reading, if you do read then change the newspaper (for a while). Tabloid can give good amount of entertainment in a very short time.
(3)Plan to visit religious place (at least for 30 minutes) during weekends.
(4) I read somewhere that over eating can cause a concentration problem.
(5)Yoga and meditation is must to improve concentration.
(6)Plan for traveling once in 3 months.

You can add many other items in above list.

Try working faster, it will reduce the chances of daydreaming. If that does not work try working slowly and mindfully.

Are you currently taking any medication? The inability to concentrate at times is due to medication side effects. If you are not taking any meds, try ginkgo biloba.

Good luck!

- You need to have a good work environment. Basicly it has to be quiet
and you need plenty of light.

- Do you read/get alot of email? if so - and they doesn't have to be answered
asap - then cut down on your email checking. Every time you read an email
you get distracted from what you were doing, and need to get "back in the
zone" (did I just say that !!?)

- Try to force yourself, e.g. plan to work 40 min's and then take a 5 min
break where you get up, take a cup of coffee ect.

- Try to focus on the fun/exciting/challengeing things in your work, if
you think what your doing is boring you won't feel like doing it.

Hope it helps,

What you eat could be a big contributor. Do you eat a lot of sugar?

I find it helpful on such days to make a list of three things that I can easily accomplish in a day. Maybe in half a day. If I'm having a really bad day, I'll make a list of three things I can do in an hour. As each thing is done, draw a line through it.

Hi Nila

seems like your mind may be thinking more than it should. Is that what is causing you not concentrate? Because you don't watch TV, drink coffee, sleep well...than probably this is the only thing I could think of...

I think trying to meditate will help.

May be http://www.dhamma.org/ will help?

Regards
Maulin

Might be that you're trying to concentrate on something you're not really ready or willing to do.

Well, sorrows can be classified into 2 categories:

Ones that you need to just get over (e.g. idiot boyfriend) and others which remain with us but we learn to live with (e.g. loss of someone) .

if yours falls in the first category, just rub it off from your mind by going on some holidays with friends/family but if it falls in the second category than learn to live with it as probably you can not undo the cause of your sorrow or can you?

You need to get a big distance between you and the pain. Time will do this. Other big things in your life will do this too: skydiving; rock climbing; scuba diving; ... just get something big and significant between now and then.

Try learning Pranic Healing - and the Twin Hearts meditation. It brings a balance to the mind and body, and connects you to divine sources of succour.

Shankar, you can learn at the Pranic Healing centre in Bangalore, at the address on this page: http://www.pranichealing.org/directory/india.htm The Bangalore website link provided on that page is no longer valid, so you can just call them for their course details.

I took a Level 1 weekend course there - it was around Rs 1100. A textbook is included for this fees. Most of the other students were foreign tourists - apparently the same course costs a lot more in their countries - e.g. it's 230 in the UK - around Rs 18000!
