Hello,
Does any one know, if German driving licence is valid in US? If yes, how long(in time) can one drive with the licence ?

Thanks a lot.
Regards,
Bhiku.

off the top of my head, i think it would depend on things like why you are in the U.S. are you here on a tourist visa, a student visa, or H1B (or something else).

It could also depend on what STATE you are in. We don't have national drivers licenses here. Each state sets up it's own rules/tests on issuing a DL. So, where in the U.S will you be?

I would suggest contacting the Department of Transportation in the state you're visiting.

I would recommend getting an International Driving Permit. IDP is generally valid in most parts of the world provided you also have your driving license (in your case, German license). Here, in US, American Automobile Association issues it. There must be similar automobile/motor association in Germany where you can get the IDP.

From http://germany.usembassy.gov/germany/faqs/travel.html

Is my German driver's license valid in the U.S.? Do I need an international driver's license to rent a car?

The U.S. has an agreement with most countries whereby the renter's full national driving license may be used for a period of up to one year in the U.S.A. This applies to the full German driving license.

International Driving Permits are generally not required in the U.S.A but it is recommended to carry one. If they are taken, they are only valid in conjunction with a full national driving license. For more information contact the ADAC or your local Straenverkehrsamt.
