My personal observations:

There are always jobs with QA requirements.

Moving up the ladder is a different story; if it is a purely QA based organization may be... But in a pure technology play or other type of setup, I don't see too much vertical movement unless you go into a new job responsibility in the same organization.

QA sure can not pay big bucks like ERP. But there are always jobs.

QA practices vary widely across companies. Try to find out what kind of a testing infrastructure the company you are applying for has. The bigger software companies like Microsoft, Google, Yahoo still pay a lot even for testing jobs.

BTW, a lot of people get bored of Testing/QA in a couple of years. But maybe, thats the case with development too

1. Yes it has good career growth. There is a dearth of good people in QA, I see a lot of bad QA out there.

2.Depends on what you call big bucks for some INR 5000 is big, for some INR 50,000 is big, for some $50,000 is big for some $500k is big.

3.Again depends on individual and company, in a company like Microsoft the profile of a tester is quite technical and there is a lot of growth on the other hand in some other company you might remain a manual tester...

We have been looking for a Performance test architect for a while and wll we get are people "claiming" to know it all , but not a single candidate who has invested his career into this...so that means that there are a lot of areas within the testing world that are totally devoid of talent.

One of the problems with being a tester is that a developer will slip schedule and slip schedule. When a tester says, my schedule says I get 6 weeks after this milestone occurs, management says they want the product to be delivered on schedule.

In some cultures the person that finds a bug and stops delivery is the nail that stands up. The chinese of japanese proverb is that the nail that stands up, gets hammered down.

Testers are viewed as second class intellectuals by pure developers. When a tester dethrones an arrogant developer, there's bad blood and ill will.

There's more negatives.

If you want to be a tester/qa type, and I would not, choose wisely the comapny you work for based on their culture. I'd look in Japan for a job.

I feel testing in a product based company has a good future.

Moving from Development to Testing is very easy..but moving from Testing to Development is difficult..Now you can think of the future of testing.
Anyone can do testing people from commerce and social background also but where as development we need to have mathematical background.

Make sure that you build up expertise in one or more sought-after domains.

Domain knowledge can be very valuable. You can even make a career change

from testing to BA roles.
