Some of the medium to large size companies have fired non-performer and on-contract people who are on bench.

Some links which I regularly keep checking...

http://jobeehive.com/company/layoffs

Not recommended at the start of the work day, except you enjoy 'schadenfreude'.

While this is true, at times performers also can get sacked for other reasons like being too expensive, the project is no longer funded, bad luck, etc.

Employees are fired for every silly reason

- Not in time
- Not dressed as per company policies
- did not fill in appraisal forms
- did not comit code to version control through functionality complete
- 2 minor bugs in UAT

I have been hearing this from my old collegues, As soon as the project is over people are fired without delay, there is no waiting period for next project, the numbers are 100's each week.some companies are offering half paid vacation to top executives

Yes lay offs are started in India. I know few people who are laid off for no strong reason.

You act surprised or shocked. After the dot com burst(after 2000) and before the offshoring wave, this was the norm in India. I have seen so many layoffs in US for the past 15 years that I see 50+ as a small number(compared to the hiring of 25,000 announced by Infosys this week).

I don't know whether the company is doing a PR stunt but this news was in the media just a few days ago.
