I thought the recent research showed coffee may offer protection against a number of common diseases (colon cancer, Parkinsons, liver disease, etc) and that caffeine is a very safe substance. There is enormous individual variation in how long it takes the body to process caffeine and how it effects people. Personally, I can't drink coffee much past the afternoon, else my night sleep is affected.
As far as addiction, people do not seem to require ever increasing amounts of caffeine to get the same effect nor do they suffer much from sudden deprivation (headaches for a few days).
Extra strong tea, which is also healthy, can provide needed caffeine as well. I actually sometimes combine both.
