I've got a bean with a getCurrentTip() method that returns a string.
In a jsp I've got a <jsp:useBean> tag with an id=pageInfo for that bean.
If I say : it prints out fine , but if I say : it does not print anything.
Can anyone tell me why ?

Print? What does "print" mean?

If you mean it doesn't display in the browser, have you checked the HTML code to see what's really going on? Is the <cut> tag being evaluated? Or being sent to the browser unprocessed? Show some initiative.

Ok. In the getCurrentTip() method the string I return is "<b>abcdefg</b>".
In the jsp when I use cut, the html code when I run it is : but nothing is displayed in the browser.

Well, of course not. Is that valid HTML?

You need to find out why the JSTL is not being evaluated. Have you read through the FAQs on this issue in the JSP FAQ?
