What's the difference between encoded and encrypted?

I'm confused by these two concepts, what's the difference?

Encoded = writing data in a standard way so it can be understood easily and uniformly by others (e.g. the character encodings UTF-8 or -16, ASCII, ISO-8859-1)

Encrypted = using a cryptographic cipher to "hide" or "secure" data so it can only be understood by the intended recipient with the correct credentials/keys (e.g. using ciphers like DES, Blowfish, RSA)
