Hmmmmm...

This has sat unanswered for a while.

Maybe the answer is to write one ourselves. Are you in?

Hii..
The Brazilian J2ME Community has attempted once to write a book but with no success... we're planning to go forth with the idea about writing a SCMAD book, but nobody has a time to invest in it... So, what do you think guys to ask to Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates to write a book covering this SCMAD version? I love their books and I think that it would help a lot the JME Community! :-D
But answering to the topic.. There's no specific JME book in the marketplace today... Guys are used to study via some JME books like John Muchow's and some others... Sun definetely left JME for the future, they are researching about bringing some new API's and memories to cell phones and then.. consequently.. JSE will be running on it! :-D

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the encouragement! We'd really, really like to write an ME book! I just responded in another thread that my guess is the reason ME hasn't taken off is because the phone manufacturers can't seem to agree on any standards, so deploying an app across different phones is such a big pain!

What surprises me is that big companies don't pick a type of phone for their employees, and write apps for that specific phone?

Bert

Well,

A couple of guys from this forum and I started writing the book for SCMAD. We are done with the material, but so far have not been able to publish it due to the uncertainty of the market potential, at least in US.

We are currently looking into publishers outside US, as the market seems to be stronger there.

If there is no sufficient interest, we may just end up open-sourcing the book!

That's right. We are current working with a couple of publishers outside U.S. to get this published as soon as possible.

We will see a certain amount of time. Like Sathya said, if there is no sufficient interest, we may just open-source the book or self-publish it.

Just to let the ranchers know, the book is now 99.99% ready to be published.

But let's see.

For the purposes of studying for this exam, I liked Beginning J2ME. I don't know that I'd use it as my sole reference for preparation, but it was definitely a good foundation.

Hi,
Even I started off with Beginning J2ME by Kundsen and Li. It was good as a starter but I found that there were just way too many API to remember.

I went through Satya's notes and they were crisp and to the point.

However, from the point of clearing the exam, I am not sure which of the two will really help. To be on safer side, read them both.

And of course, the spec. I guess a combination of the three should help. I am taking my exam in a couple of weeks from now. Still doubtful on how helpful it will be in the long run (with Android making its way slowly...)

However, my money is still on Sun Standards.

All the best,
Sanjeev

And you will be kicked out from here as well. JavaRanch is not the place to trade illegally in copyrighted material. How do you think authors (of which we have quite a few hanging out with us) would feel about people stealing their work?

I can't wait for SCMAD book. Just make sure there aren't any typos and it is fully covered all the exam objective. Whether I will take the SCMAD exam or not is depend on this book.

I always rely heavily on study guide. While waiting for this book, I'm planning and preparing for SCJD. I hope the book will be published as soon as I passed SCJD.

I run a little publishing company, and would be more than happy to publish any work you have.

I do it for the love, not the money, so I'm pretty generous with the profits - if there are any.

Message me through the ranch, if you're interested. You can also check out my other books and titles through my signature links. My Hibernate book just came out. It's got a pretty neat supporting website. I'd be happy to put together the same type of things for your book.

So, have we hijacked this thread enough?

Why the good authors such as K&B, Cameron, or Andrew Monkhouse don't write the book for SCMAD ? I'm still waiting for the book.

Just a couple of comments about study guides...

Of course when we write a study guide we don't want there to be any errors in the book. Of course, since we're human beings, there always are some errors. Anyone who writes a study guide book is being generous with their time - it's no way to get rich! So, when you pick up someone's study guide, be generous with your reviews! Think of your study guide as something that will help you, but you still have to take a LOT of responsibility for your own learning! If you find an error in a study guide that's a good sign that you're really learning the material!

hth,

Bert

p.s. We'd like to write a SCMAD book, and if the time ever feels right, we'll let everyone know. At this point though it wouldn't be appropriate for anyone to wait for us because we might never write it at all!
