I passed SCJP 5.0 today with a 59. I was sure I had failed, as sure as I was that I would easily pass. I studied for 3 months, read the K & B book thrice, and scored most recently 85 and 78 on the Master Exam's. I bought Whizlabs, which I didn't like because the code was so scrunched up I could barely read it (I'm on a Mac and bought Parallels just for this if that matters) and scored 74. Also bought Enthuware and got a 72 and a 68 (much better product IMHO).

Given the anecdotes in this forum about how much easier it was than the Mocks, I had confidence. My own experience was that it was the most difficult exam I had taken. It was grueling, and I know that I know the material more positively than my score reflects, but hey...I passed. I understand that the tests are comprised randomly from a pool, so I guess some get easier questions, or I got really, really hard ones... or I had a giant brain fart.

To K & B...

Great book. My favorite quote from p 152, Chapter 2 Certification Summary.

"And once again, you learned that the exam includes tricky questions designed largely to test your ability to recognize just how trich the questions can be."

So true.

It seems you are "Lost" fans as I. I loved the Islands of Isolation GC code, and recognized "the Lost numbers (4, 8, 15, 6, 23, 42)" that I had to sort in a couple of mock questions. I prior to seeing this had used the same numbers in the little programs I wrote!

Here are my "Lost" theories as they pertain to Java.

- Ben didn't move the island, he only nulled the references. It will be saved from GC when the Oceanic 6 refer to it again.

- The Smoke Monster is a polymorphic manifestation of the heap.

- When Ben told Locke about "silly Dharma Initiative projects", he was talking about .net.

Good luck to all who venture forward on this exam. Prepare and don't be lulled by the "easy" stories. It is challenging.

ciao for now...chip SCJP 5.0!
