Hello, I'm thinking to modify the ui of a java web application that uses applets and I don't know what are the alternatives.
I played a little with GWT and I found the result great but I think using it will have a great impact on the server side to and I don't want to modify a lot in that area.
Do you know some simple alternative that could help me?
What do you mean by "modifying" the applet UI? Is it a total revamp? Or is it modifying something which is already existing? If it is the latter, it might be simpler to just modify your existing applet, rebuild and deploy.
What is the premise behind looking for alternatives? Have you run into any technical problems because of applets?
If you want something which minimal code/configuration changes, then check out JWS
I know and I'm thinking at that... but I asked only to find out if there could be a simpler way.. using as much as possible from the work already done.

If the applet "looks like crap", I would say it has nothing to do with technology. Believe me, I have seen professional web sites, which look worse.
If you are wanting to improve on the look and feel or the usability of the applet, I suggest you get back to the drawing board to work on the "design" and "control flow" of the applet.
Also, are you picking up the System LAF and setting it to the applet? I mean run on Win with Win LAF, on Mac with MacLAF and so on. In my opinion the default LAF sucks.
Are you using Swing or AWT?
