Now I am wokring on Java/J2EE environment. Today my manager asked me to work on ColdFusion technology. I dont have any practical experience other than Java. They are goign to give training on ColdFusion for two weeks and then I will have to work for 3-4 moths on that technology.
What do you say? Will it be helpgul to my career if I go through ColdFusion? If any of you have some idea about that technology please please share your thoughts. Whats ColdFusion and whats the any relation with Java???

Hard to say. You really are the only person who can answer this question because it sort of depends on what you want to do in your career. Learning new technologies is never a bad thing in my mind. But if you are only interested in being a J2EE developer I wouldn't say it will be overly helpful.

None. I mean they are both programming related but that's about the extent of that.
Cold fusion is a basically a RAD tool for web applications. I am not sure exactly how popular it continues to be. There are still many sites that use it and I am sure there are still those who develop with it but my sense is that has largely been supplanted by PHP as a rapid and simple web application development tool/language.
I guess it can help you in the sense that not every web application is a nail that can be stuck with the Java hammer. So it may give you more opportunities down the road that wouldn't be available to you otherwise. But a cold-fusion developer would be junior in career development to a competent and experiences J2EE developer.
I personally feel if you are in early stages of your career (less than 2-3 years of programming experience), it helps a lot to get exposure to diverse technologies. Later you can choose and decide what to take as your area of expertise based on your interest and market trends.

Please reply your suggestions, its urgent.
Thanks.
Why dont you post this query in Jobs Discussion forum, it should not be in Meaningless Drive.
To answer your query ColdFusion is something similar to your JSPs but it wont have any relationshiop with Java or JSPs. Having exposure in different technologies is always useful. ColdFusion is not as powerful as Java. Work in ColdFusion and come back to Java after sometime, it will help you.
Maximilian- Frankly saying I am much much interested on Java and I would like to build my career with Java bcause I am thinking Java will be evergreen...
You are saying ColdFusion developer will be junior when compared with experienced Java developer. I am not going to change my platform, my manager said- I will be in that project for 3 or 4 months then I will return back to Java.
Manish- Yeah, I am having two years of experience on Java/J2EE technologies. In this case will it be really helpful for me?
Yeah KJ Reddy- manager is saying I will be back on to Java again. what can i do??
I am confused totally, but mu current situation is - I cant frankly say NO to my manager proposal. what to do???

Greetings,
Seriously, i don't think learning ColdFusion will hamper with your chance of advancing in this technology.
Firstly, which employer will dread over an employee who knows many different technology?
Secondly, i doubt Java is going to make any big changes for this coming years...
Thirdly, its always better to diverse your knowledge in this field... isn't it?
Now, since you have the chance, grasp on it and be an expert in the field! Moreover, not many people are that skillful in ColdFusion technology as compared to Java... so, one day, you might never know... you could turn out as one of the top developers in ColdFusion!

Working in ColdFusion for 3 months dont stop your career in Java. It gives chance to you to explore how Java is better against ColdFusion.
