As per my vague understanding Leopard is a 32 bit OS although my Macbook is a 64 bit machine. So when I go to download and install software, for example MySQL, am I targeting the OS or the hardware? MySQL provides a 32bit and a 64bit binary for OSX on Intel hardware.

Thanks.

Leopard (OS X 10.5) is 64-bit. To make sure your machine can run in 64-bit click the Apple icon in the top left corner and select 'About this Mac' to make sure OS X 10.5 is installed and your processor is a Core 2 Duo (Intel) or G5 (PPC). If both of these are there, you can run 64-bit applications.

Thanks. I do have 10.5 and Core 2 Duo so I should be good. I'm going to have to find the resource that says 10.5 is a 32 bit OS.

hi there,

to be precise : currently 10.5 hosts 32bit and 64bit applications on top of a 32bit kernel

That's what I had read. So I wasn't totally crazy. Thanks.
