I haven't bought any yet. I feel it is time for one( along with home projector, since home projectors with DLP etc are becoming so affordable).

Please post your present configurations + favourite configurations.

My audio setup has grown organically over the last decade. There is no way at any time I could have afforded to get everything in one hit!

I now have:

Yamaha RX-V750 Av receiver (replaced my old, but nicer sounding Marantz stereo amp) - Unfortunately this was the limit of my budget. - If I'd had access to US pricing instead of the hyper-inflated Australian prices I would probably have bought a Denon AVR3805 rather than the Yammmie.

2 x Linn "Index" speakers on ground stone stands (front L and R)
1 x cheap & nasty "TDL-CSS" Centre speaker
2 x Polk Audio R40 towers (back L and R)
...unfortunately I have yet to invest in a subwoofer.. but get decent low-end from the Linns for music (need more groundshaking <30Hz for movies though!)

I did have an old NAD CD player and a Sony S715 DVD player - but since I'm in the process of ripping my entire collection to disk I'll soon be able to "archive" those bit of equipment!

My current pride and joy (and source of ALL media to the living room) - Is a home built "MythTV" HTPC with all audio using the onboard SPDIF out socket on the nForce4 motherboard. The PC is a bit noisey and I need to replace a couple of fans to get it almost 'silent' - but the ease of use and centralisation of all media (not to mention the benefits of scheduling and timeslip viewing of TV) is fantastic.

When you're out shopping for Av gear their are only 2 rules:

1) Listen to every bit of equipment. Bring your own music/movies - things that you *know* - so the comparison between gear can be fairer...
2) DONT listen to sales-drones! They'll try to tell you that "XYZ" is a fantastically cool feature that you'll really need - or that you *need* to have speakers that match each other or some other bulls**t... Think carefully about what you want to use your gear for (Do you need "Component Upscaling" in a AV reciever if you're only going to feed your TV driect via an HDMI cable and not through the reciever? DO you need gazzilion inputs if you're only going to source all your media from a PC? etc etc)...

Let us know what you end up with! (I'm thinking about getting a projector so I can phase out my crappy 51cm 4:3 tv!)

I am using the Yamaha YSP-1000 "5 in 1" digital sound projector. I actually call it "85 in 1", since it contains 42 independent amplifiers, 42 sound drivers, and acts as a audio receiver. It really is all in one box.

OK I LIED

I have never owned a piece of McIntosh labs audio equipment.

It's just that when I really wanted it when I was much younger, I could not afford it. For many years now I could afford it, but I don't want it now.

I still believe that vacuum tube power amplification produces a better sound than transistors. But I guess that's a physical characteristic of tubes that can never be emulated in solid state circuitry?

I'm talking of course, about the phenomenon of 'clipping', when one raises the power requirements of the amp a little over what it can deliver completely free of distortion... (AKA Pump Up The Volume!)

(?)

Which immediately brings up the question "What if you never raise the volume so high past the power amp's 'clipping'"? Is the tube sound still always better than the transistor sound?

(EE's opinions, please?)

home:
sony receiver, Cerwin-Vega speaker

car 1:
sony cd player, factory speaker, jbl sub woofer

car 2:
factory system (bose)

home system was bought in my 2nd year in the US, just after I moved out from dorm. i rented a place for $200 / month.

i still remember i got them from best buy. when i waited for a friend to pick me up, a guy walked over, "brother, do you have a dollar", i gave him a dollar, watch him go into a taco bell.

i moved my home >10 times since then. some just cross the town, some 3,000 miles away. i managed to keep them. even i do not set them up all the time.
