Hi Folks, I used to watch a lot of movies back in India ( 1 movie every weekend in the theater) and after moving to US I started watching lot of hollywood movies. They are kind of addictive and now I find bollywood movies totally crap. They have no story, jarring artificial techno-beat kind of music that I absolutely abhor, and really bad acting. Result is that I seldom rent new bollywood movies. There are a few exceptions, of course. Hence this thread. Recently I watched "Page 3" and I liked it very much.

Interesting thing is that I do rent bollywood oldies ( from 50s to 70s) from NetFlix and I really love them. They have all the things ( excellent music, acting, and story that makes at least some sense) that new movies lack. In the past year I have watched all Guru Dutt's, lots of Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Raj Kumar, etc.

So lets post some good movies. Movies that one can really enjoy watching.

Let me start with this:

Recent Releases:
Page 3
D
Company

Oldies:
Any movie with music by Shankar Jaikishan
Satya

I don't want to take anything away from your opinion about Hollywood. SOme good movies you might be thinking with good story + from hollywood may not be directly from Hollywood. They could be from England or from Pixar(which is not really hollywood but an off shoot).

Please tell this to hollywood movie studio guys:"You are producing movies(almost all of them) with great story lines". I bet they will take you to free lunch and give some movie passes.

I gave the above statement because the consensus among hollywood officianados is:"It is very difficult to find good story lines lately". That is why we are seeing major shifts towards sequels and prequels.

BTW many bollywood fans did not like 'D'.

You are absolutely correct. Some hollywood movies are total lifts from other regions. Eg. The Ring was totally copied from Japanese The Ringu. I am sure there are tons of others.

I don't necessarily have any problem with copying as long as the final product is actually good. That is where I see that many bollywood copy movies fail. For eg. Heartbreakers was good but "Bach ke rahna re baba" was horrible. Then Mrs. Doubtfire was great and Chachi 420 was also good. Anyway, we are digressing.

I just want to know some good movies that I can watch, man! If some one or you didn't like 'D', fine. I would like to know what movies others or you think are worth watching

BTW, I am not saying that all hollywood movies are great. Some are really crap. But my observation is that % of crap movies in hollywood is substantially less than in bollywood. Please debate this in another thread if you want to

my $0.02 - of late there are no good hollywood movies coming out. Everything seems to be a sequel or a movie version of a videogame/cartoon series. I've swtiched to watching Independent movies and foreign language movies (French / Italian).

Last English movie that I really enjoyed watching was "Shattered Glass" - a gud one if someones really interested!

He's not such a good actor...but movie is good.

Sur is about a music teacher and his innocent but talanted student and his own ego. Beautiful, haunting songs as well....provided you like his voice.

If you like Garam Hawa, you should like "Pinjar" as well -- excellent performances by Manoj Bajpaye and Urmila (yes, she can act) and "haath chhoote bhi to rishtey nahi..." is just haunting.

I have seen it in bit & pieces, and I liked it.

I think I liked the songs of Pinjar more than film(though yet to watch it properly).

I have read two novels of Amrita Pritam, one was collection of short stories and other was collection of her dreams and her relationship with Iqbal.
Both were too good.
I dont see much happening rt now in Hindi lireature. Looks like Surendra Mohan Pathak is ruling

Lakshya should be a motivation for all those kids who feel like losers, when nothing seems to be going right, no matter what decision you take.

If a movie does not show any non-practical and non-logical thing and if it answers all questions raised by itself during those 2 and half hours without any loopholes, then you ought to like the movie irrespective of star cast .
And offcourse climax should be good.
