Dear friend,
I hope(according to me) this is not essential as it has been clearly mentioned in the instructions.html as

You will not receive extra credit points for work beyond the requirements of the specification

It is suggested that you could read Andrew's book titled
SCJD with J2SE5 which is really of great help in solving or designing the assignment.

Best of Luck for your assignment

I can't think of a good reason why not. Might not gain you anything, but probably wont' hurt either, as long as it's attractive.

You must remember that simplicity is the key. Doing that not only waste your time, but also your score will probably reduced.

If i'm not wrong, in the scjd site they mention something about some upload problems that occurred due to large project files, and also recommends to remove the images if your project end up too big. But i'm not sure where exactly i read it.

And this presumption about "your score will probably be reduced" is based on what?
Let the man do it the way he wants. Why would the score be reduce if he uses icons?
Especially since with icons he can provide a toolbar, which is quite standard for a user-friendly GUI application. Did you have a toolbar in you GUI? Do you think it's a bad idea to have a toolbar?

A few icons it's probably something like a few bytes or so. I had quite a few big images for my userguide, and also a lot of classes, and the jar did no go past 800 or 900 KB.
