you know, the forum keeps in mind the "be nice" rule.
that why javaranch big moose saloon is a great forum since 1998.
so, you should implement a "karma" engine, that I saw somewhere.
thats the following, users have a "karma" rating, that's shown with its name, and every other user have the power to raise or low other user's karma useng [-] and [+] buttons right in the side of the karma, but with some things in mind:

  • --> more "hight level" users, will modify more points in user's karma
  • --> less leveled users, like greenhorns, modify only few points in the karma.

  • so that, lets suppose that i have my karma rating of 57.

then, a greenhorn find that I am offensive, and wants to lower my karma, it just press the [-] button and I now have 56 karma points, but right then, a bartender thinks that i'm nice, and wants to raise my karma, so the bartender just press the [+] button, and I have now 66 karma points.

that would be interesting in the point that not everybody have the same effect on people's karma.

of course this can be changed, like:

  • adding consequences for too low or too hight karma.
  • classifying members (as done with the number of posts)
  • getting more benefits to high karma users
  • having consequenses to low karma users
  • or even the user could be expelled if it's karma gets really really really extremely low (like -200)

  • I think it would be interesting because would be a reason for people to be nice, minding that you start with a 0 karma rating, and it could be positive or negative.

I think it could be great, would stimulate people to be nice and stuff.

JForum does have some kind of karma feature, but it was one of the first things to get turned off, so I couldn't even say how it works. This is something that has been discussed amongst moderators repeatedly in the past, and the consensus has been that it will do more harm than good. You can find some of the public parts of that discussion here - which also happens to be the earliest discussion of using JForum, I think.

To add to what Ulf said I also think that we already have a "karma" system in place. The incentive is not getting votes for replies, however. The incentive is the privilege to continue to participate in this wonderful community. Those that choose not to be nice eventually lose that privilege unless they can change their attitude. Part of what makes this community so great is the simplicity of it. We start adding too many "social" bells and whistles it begins to detract from the goal here, which is to help folks learn java and related technologies.

There are enough rules in our lives. We don't need more here.

I don't know. IMO, I think that people who aren't naturally nice, isn't going to get nicer to get higher karma points.

And people who are nice, and very helpful probably do it because they are naturally helpful, and believe in "giving back". I don't think any of them do it to get karma points. I think they would prefer an environment where they can be helpful, and like the people that they are helping -- and be appreciated by real people, and not a point system.

This is my opinion, of course...

I just remembered that Slashdot used to have specific karma points, I think they could go up to 50. But they ended that a few years ago; you can probably find discussions about the reasons on the site.

I haven't seen the "be nice" rule being violated that much as compared to say the naming policy or posting in the wrong forums. Mind you, I am not saying the be nice is not violated at all. But whenever it is violated, it is ruthlessly squashed. As one moderator (Campbell Ritchie if I am not mistaken) once replied, "this is a family forum", and we want to keep it that way.

well, i never thought my suggestion will attract atention from two sheriffs and two bartenders, so now I see that this "suggestion" forum is really a "suggestion" forum, not only a "leave-a-place-for-users-to-say-thing-we-will-never-look-at-all" forum, i appreciate the attention i recieved from you guys, and sorry if i was inconvenient.

i just thought it could be interesting, this forum is a "family forum" as said Maneesh Godbole. and i'm like... i'm never satisfied, i always want things to be better, and sometimes i cant keep my mouth closed for this ideas, i thought it could be nice, of course that what Henry said is completely true, but it would be one more feature to the forum.

    sorry for all.

    regards.

Ha! And you thought nobody was looking
No you were not at all inconvenient and nothing to be sorry about either! We love to hear what everybody is thinking. Any ideas to make the ranch a better place are always welcome.
