Is time travel an option? I heard Atlantis was (is? when you time travel, your past is present, present is future and when you are back, to future, its present - its all very confusing!) a beautiful city.

There are no cities which are entirely beautiful. Even Paris (which I agree is much more beautiful then most cities) has its run down areas. Another example is Athens - wonderful old town and the Acropolis is amazing, but 15 mins walk from these are some nasty concrete tower blocks.

Some cities like London and Dublin go further - they save you some walking time by mixing together the beautiful and the ugly by putting them right next to each other!

I guess it depends on how you define beautiful. For some its gardens and parks, for others its old architecture, and for other people its large glass office blocks. Some people like the strangest things - the large number of ugly concrete nightmares thrown up in the 60's confirm this! The tricky bit is to decide what you think it beautiful.....

Edinburgh is in my top 10, too. I used to live in Manchester (in noone's top 10) but from there is was easy to get to Edinburgh. Every time I think of Edinburgh, I think about one night I was on a pub crawl and this drunk lad staggered by me, talking loudly, but with such a thick accent I couldn't understand a word he was saying (Glaswegian?). When I turned a corner, there he was, puking like a firehose onto a BMW. Ever since then I associate thick Scottish accents and projectile vomitting. Unfair, I know, but hard to forget.

Salamanca in Spain.
Or Toscana, Italy. Like Florence, Siena.
Strange places around there. Like San Gimignano. They had so much fights during Renaicanse time that all the richer families built their own tower to survive siege in case of trouble with their neighbours.

I've heard that St. Petersburg and Viena are beautiful. Never been there.
Or wait for Tintin Herge. He must know as he has a record of nearly 100% travel related postings on JR.

St. Petersburg is lovely. Vienna is a little expensive and you really have to like big, imperial architecture to enjoy the place. When I travelled there I was a penniless student though; perhaps its more fun with a big fat wallet.

Of the more interesting places I travelled to, Istanbul is quite a place. Or Pokhara, just for the setting really (though its probably not the most sensible place to go these days).

I'm sure whatever city YOU are in would be the most beautiful to them.

Paris is my favourite. But other old European cities e.g.Vieanna, Berlin, Munich,Bern are also very good.
