I like how my wife and I can share our iTunes libraries with each other as well as sharing our libraries on another PC I have setup as a media PC. However, I don't like the fact that I have to have iTunes up and running the whole time. Is there any utility app of any kind or anyway to share an iTunes library without full blown iTunes running? A little daemon perhaps?

I've received ads for TuneRanger, haven't tried it or know anyone who has (lots of grains of salt there, obviously ;)), so fwiw:

Cool application, but not what the op was asking. They want to be able to stream their music without having to have the iTunes application running.

It also depends on the format of the music, like all mine are m4a files, and realPlayer and I think Winamp can play them. Yes Winamp can, because I used to stream my music through winamp remote to my living room via my Nintendo Wii.

Well, I swore a long time ago I'd never use RealPlayer unless someone had a gun to my head and even then, if I felt like i had accomplished everything in my life.....

Winamp Rempte is PC (Windows) only so that is out. I didn't think about looking for something non-itunes but I'd be willing to bet mac apps like that I hard to find since iTunes already does it. All my music is now DRM free m4a.

Thanks for the advice though.

Hm, didn't consider that. I'll take a stab at it. Downloading now. The key for me is using less memory than iTunes. I think VLC should, but we'll see. I'll post back after I try it.

VLC won't work because it has to be playing on the machine sending the stream. It's not the same as making a library available. Now, what I might be able to do is simply share a folder on my mac and use something other than itunes on the other pc's to play music from that share. Going to try that next...
