I find it annoying for a company that I am applying to to ask me to reformat my resume according to their resume template, before entertaining me.

What do you think?

If the company has a standardized format that everyone is familiar with, then it probably makes it easier for them to process your application. And you want to make it easy for the company, right?

Another way to think of it is... Of all the hoops that you have to jump through during the interview process, this one is likely to be the easiest.

If all the companies I apply to will do that, it would be a lot of time wasted. I have more than 10 years of experience and it takes time to reformat it. (If only there is a Spring proxy bean to do it for me. It seems that learning Spring is making me lazy.)

My current resume format is proper for the country I am applying into. I find it odd.

My gut feeling is that this company is wasting my time. Anyway, I better get on it.

They could only be wasting your time if you assume that they won't hire you, and if you assume that then you might as well not apply. If they invite you for an interview then this is time rather well spent, isn't it?

Sending a resume should be a rare enough occurrence that spending time on it is not a big burden. You need to adapt it to the position in question anyway, so a reformatting should not be a big deal.

Unfortunately, there are more annoying and time-wasting documentation processes than a template. My "favorite" is the recruitment websites that a number of big companies use. If you really want to put all the information into those online forms, write off half a day or more.

It is annoying and if it's a employees market I would say, forget it. But if you really need a job then it is not such an effort to fill in the form. And there are far more insulting things employers can do in the interview process then this, if they know they can choose from a number of candidates.

While I am whining here, the position got filled. Darn it, I did 10 lines already, wasting half an hour, and another half hour whining here .

...definitely not an employee market now...

Actually I do think I will not get hired, either that or I am tired of applying already, that is why I feel this way.

Anyway, 'human resource evil'?

How about, a 3pm appoinment, and find out that around 20 others also are on 3pm appointment - for the same HR personnel? And someone gives you an empty application form and tells you to fill it up while you wait. Anyway, this is just on some countries.

We should not have negative approach. Half an hour or one hour is not wasted, it is invested in finding job. Our investments not always give return, we should take it that way. What is learned is wherever I apply , I will have to beat at least 20 to get job. So I should be prepared for that. If you loose hopes, you are lost already.

I know some of the IT companies invite so many professionals at the same time that if you have an appointment at 3:00 PM, you may get chance for the interview around 6:00PM. This happens even in the hot market. And after waiting so much time, you do not get through interview, it is real frustrating and I understand it. But if we need a job, we have to deal with it anyway.

Somewhere I read that finding job is another full time job.

One of the golden rules of writing a resume is "not to write one size fits all resume". You can have a master resume document and for each job application, you need to customize to the job specification. This becomes even more important when you have 10 year experience because you have to decide what to include and what not to include. Once you have a master document, it is a matter of copy, paste, and fine tune. Spending time on a resume is not a waste of time. It is a time well spent. It will be really worth your effort, if you can standout from the fellow candidates. Especially in tough times like this.

May be as job market is not good they might be getting lot of resumes and to filter out the people who are really interested they might be using this trick

Other reasons for making their process simple they may expecting in pre defined format.

It is not always the best candidate who wins the job, but the one presents him or her in a better light. That is life
