I was thinking about shows filmed in the USA (current and historical) that are based in (real, existing) cities

Initially I was thinking about Mork and Mindy, based in Boulder, Colorado, then I was trying to recall if Happy Days was also 'set' in a specific location. For some reason I was also trying to recall where The Drew Carey Show was set, and whether at some stage it unofficially moved.

There are of course the various CSI offerings.

Would anyone like to answer the questions posed, or list some other Show/City combinations?

Happy Days was set in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As was its first spinoff, Laverne and Shirley, for most of its life. Dunno about other spinoffs like Joanie Loves Chachi, which I never watched. Except of course for Mork and Mindy, which you've already noted. I lived in Boulder for several years, and made a point of tracking down recordings of the first few episodes, just to see what things looked like. Sure, most of the scenes were shot in soundstages in LA, as usual. But there were a number of establishing shots that were recognizably in Boulder. Kind of fun to see the changes.

I think most TV shows I can think of had a definite city setting, often a real-world city. It might be shorter to try to list those that didn't. But I'm not going to try for any exhaustive list. There are many. If you want to list them, can we at least leave out those set in LA (or more generally, anywhere in Southern California) or New York? There are gobs and gobs of those. The next tier would be San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston, I think. Maybe also leave out those that mention the setting in the name, because those are pretty obvious, yes? Not sure if you want to include fictional towns set in specific real US states, but there are a lot of those in TV land, too.

I will mention one current show that's set in the very suburb where I now live: HBO's Big Love, set in Sandy, Utah. Though much of the filming is really done near Sacramento, California. But some, at least, is very definitely done here in town. I've been recommending the show to other recent arrivals for indoctrination into local culture. ;)

That was of course after he'd moved there from Boston where he was a regular in Cheers

Moving away from comedy, there was Wired which was based in Baltimore

The Drew Carey Show was set in Cleveland, Ohio. I recall references to the Cleveland Cavaliers as a perennially losing team; but then, it's been a few years ...

"Here Come the Brides" was set in Seattle. (That was the show that gave singer Bobby Sherman many passionate pre-teen admirers.)

"All in the Family" was set in Queens, NYC.

"One Day At a Time" was set in Indianapolis, I think.

The first "Bob Newheart Show" was set in Chicago.

"The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was set in Minneapolis, Minnisota.

"The Sopranos" was set outside of Newark, New Jersey.

"The Beverly Hillbillies" was set in Los Angeles, California.

"Animaniacs" was set in Hollywood.

"Batman" was set in Gotham City. Superman was set in Metropolis.

"The Simpsons" was set in Springfield (I'm not sure what state).

I'm not sure about "Beverly Hills 90210." "Miami Vice" was set somewhere in Florida.

Where is Springfield? The short answer is: on your television. Springfield does not exist. It doesn't have a real state, and the fact that it has no state is nothing more than a running gag. . .
Proof? No state's capital city is called "Capital City". . . No state's motto is "Not just another state". And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There is an enormous number of geographical contradictions between episodes which make it impossible for Springfield to actually exist in any real American state.

According to The Simpsons Movie, the 4 states bordering Springfield are Ohio, Nevada, Maine, and Kentucky.

Less mysterious is where Matt Groening grew up (Portland, OR). I've worked in Springfield, OR, which has a terrain, city planning, and a type of populace that would be eerily familiar to fans of the show.

I know at some point Groening "confirmed" the Oregon city as the source of his inspiration, but many fact hounds took it more as a long-awaited admission than a revelation.

The West Wing was set in Washington DC
Kinda obvious.

A fair number of shows are set in DC, most don't use much footage from DC, which is weird, since its a very recognizable city.

I thought noting that the Beverly Hillbillies was based in Los Angeles (Beverly Hills, to be precise, hence the pun title) was a heavy enough lily-gilding. But as long as we're here, let's clear up potential confusion:

CSI: Miami is based in Florida, not Ohio. Same is true for Miami Vice.

CSI: Las Vegas is based in Nevada, not New Mexico.

There is no Twin Peaks in Washington State, where the namesake show is set, but there is a Twin Peaks in San Francisco, where the writers bought all the marijuana they smoked before developing the pilot.

The movie American Graffiti is set in Turlock, CA (i.e., a Central Valley hick town in the middle of nothing). The film was actually shot in Marin County, mostly in the town of San Rafael, which tells you how glamorous many parts of the county really are.

In the old television series Streets of San Francisco, most of the "open" shots were actually done in Marin County, where they could get enough sunlight to make it look like they were really outdoors. San Francisco in those days was typically much foggier and overcast than a cameraman would like.

Third Rock from the Sun, I should have mentioned, was in fact shot on location, the planet Earth. The town of Rutherford unfortunately doesn't exist, the state of Ohio unfortunately does.

Have you ever noticed that most television characters who are supposed to be from Michigan are potrayed as as stubborn, contrary jerks? That's all true,

The original version of "Beverly Hills 90210" was set in Topeka, Kansas. For the current remake, they've moved the show to Paraguay.
